Network I Conference Recap

The Network I: International Conference on the Circulation of Ideas, Concepts, Works and Other Things was held in İzmir, Türkiye, on 10–12 October 2022. The conference was organized by Ahu Selin Erkul Yağcı and Selahattin Karagöz, with Selahattin Karagöz serving as editor of the abstract book.

The event brought together scholars working in translation studies, literary studies, archaeology, history, cultural studies, and related fields. The programme featured keynote lectures by Prof. Sue-Ann Harding and Prof. Neslihan Kansu-Yetkiner, invited talks by Prof. Remzi Yağcı and Prof. Mustafa Hamdi Sayar, and presentations by participants from a range of Turkish and international institutions.

The conference abstracts reflect the interdisciplinary scope of the event. Papers addressed topics including translation and cultural circulation, literary transfer, adaptation, paratexts, children’s literature, terminology, publishing, social media, memory, mythology, archaeology, ancient material culture, and translation sociology. The programme also included a Translation Sociology Panel, which focused on the circulation of translated products, labels, and forms of legitimacy in literary and cultural fields.

As the inaugural event in the series, Network I established the thematic and intellectual basis for subsequent Network gatherings. It documented a sustained interdisciplinary engagement with circulation as a concept connecting texts, ideas, objects, agents, and institutions across historical and cultural contexts.
